Fisherman stand on their boats, holding birds on strings as they swoop down into the water and return with fish. The fishermen fill up their baskets with pounds of fish to sell at the market. The story, Magic and the Night River teaches the reader to believe in magic and follow your dreams.
Yoshi would fish with his Grandfather every day, but they had a strange way of doing so. Instead of using bait, like worms, they used cormorants, and a single Itchi-ban bird. When the sun set, Grandfather would ‘Light the first fire’ to tell the other fishermen that it was time. When a miracle happens, nobody knows what to say.
People would swear that the Itchi-ban was magic, but it was actually its handler, Grandfather, who treated his birds with care, so they would always come back, even without the strings pulling them back. Kino, the owner of a boat, is selfish towards Grandfather and the cormorants towards the beginning, but towards the end, he learns that if you treat the birds with care, they will help you back.
